Anti-reflective coating, material and shape

The anti-reflective coating reduces glare on the crystal surface: the dial is easier to read in bright light or well-lit interiors. It improves legibility, not protection.

As for the material, mineral crystal has a standard hardness of about 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale. It is a good compromise between strength and price, but it scratches more than sapphire. The domed shape gives a curve that sits proud of the bezel, which exposes the centre of the crystal a little more.
