The thickest in the range

At 3.0 mm, this is the thickest of our domed mineral crystals with base. It also has the narrowest range: 27 diameters, from 27.0 mm to 40.0 mm. It meets a specific need rather than everyday use.

Which watches is it for?

A crystal this thick is often found on sturdily built men's watches, such as sports or military-inspired models, whose bezel is designed for a solid crystal. It is generally suitable when the old crystal measures around 3 mm at its edge: a thinner crystal would not be held properly in the seat.

Benefits and trade-offs

The shape combines a flat base, which sits in the bezel, with a domed section that rises above it. The thickness provides welcome rigidity and a premium look.

The material is mineral crystal, with a standard hardness of about 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale: a good balance between resistance and price. It does scratch more easily than sapphire, however, and the height of the dome exposes it to rubbing.

Finally, a 3.0 mm crystal adds bulk: check the space available between the dial, the hands and the crystal.

Using a calliper, measure at the base, on the flat section, not at the top of the curve.

The thickness

Place the jaws on the edge to read the actual thickness, without the height of the dome.
