A flat crystal with a bevelled edge

What sets this 1.5 mm mineral crystal apart is its chamfer: the top edge is cut at an angle. This detail is often found on watches where the crystal stands proud of the bezel, where a sharp edge would catch the light or your sleeves. It generally suits medium-sized watches, as the range runs from 22.0 mm to 34.0 mm. If your original crystal has this bevel, it is best to replace it with an identical model to preserve the look of the watch.

Mineral crystal: what you need to know

Mineral crystal is a hardened glass with a hardness of around 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale. It is a good compromise between durability and price:

  • it resists everyday scratches better than an acrylic crystal;
  • it remains more affordable than sapphire;
  • on the other hand, it scratches more easily than sapphire and cannot be polished like acrylic.

Taking the right measurements

Diameter

Remove the worn crystal and measure it with a calliper across several axes, closing the jaws without forcing. With a chamfered crystal, measure the largest diameter, i.e. at the base of the bevel, not across the narrower top face.

Thickness

Measure the thickness at the edge of the crystal: it should be 1.5 mm. Any difference can change how high the crystal sits in the bezel. Every step is explained in our measuring guide.
