A 3.5 mm crystal is no ordinary crystal: it is intended for cases designed to take a thick crystal. It is often found on diving watches, rugged sports watches and cases with a deep bezel.

Which watches?

Its range from 25.0 mm to 50.0 mm makes it mainly suited to medium to large men's watches. It is generally the right choice when the old crystal also measures 3.5 mm: a thinner crystal would leave play in the gasket and compromise the seating.

What mineral crystal offers

Hardness of around 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, good impact resistance thanks to its thickness, moderate cost: mineral is a sensible compromise. It does, however, scratch more than sapphire, which matters on a watch used outdoors. The page on the types of crystal will help you compare.

Measuring a thick crystal

  • Measure the diameter with a calliper across several axes.
  • Measure the thickness at the edge, not in the centre if the face is damaged.
  • Check the condition of the gasket: a thick crystal often sits on a specific gasket.
