Dome acrylic crystal

A dome acrylic crystal for vintage watches

Acrylic crystal, also known as Plexiglas or hesalite, is often found on old and vintage watches, as well as on many pocket watches. The dome shape curves continuously from the edge to the centre: the crystal rises well above the bezel and gives the dial the domed look typical of period models. It is generally suitable for cases whose original crystal was already rounded in this way.

What you need to know about acrylic

• Lightweight: it does not add weight to the watch.
• Safe: on impact it does not shatter into sharp fragments, which protects the dial and hands.
• Low hardness: it scratches easily in everyday wear.
• Repairable: light scratches can be polished out, as explained in the guide to polishing an acrylic crystal.

Choosing the right diameter

Measure the old crystal

Remove the old crystal and measure its diameter with a calliper. On a dome crystal, measure at the base, meaning the edge that sits in the bezel, not at the top of the curve. Take several readings if the crystal is distorted.

Why go slightly larger

An acrylic crystal is not glued like a mineral crystal: generally it is slightly compressed when fitted, then expands in its seat and is held in place by pressure. That is why you usually choose a diameter slightly larger than the seat. Full details are in the measuring guide.
