Slightly domed acrylic crystal

Between a flat crystal and a pronounced dome, the slightly domed crystal offers a moderate curve: it rounds gently towards the centre without really rising above the bezel.

Which watches is it for?

Acrylic crystal, also called Plexiglas or hesalite, is often found on old, vintage and pocket watches. The slightly domed profile is generally suited to watches whose original crystal had only a gentle curve. Its wide range of diameters covers both small cases and pocket watches.

The pros and cons of acrylic

Here is what sets this material apart:

• it is lightweight;
• it does not shatter into sharp fragments, limiting damage to the dial on impact;
• its hardness is low, so it scratches easily;
• it can be polished, which removes light scratches.

To restore clarity to a marked crystal, refer to the guide to polishing an acrylic crystal.

How to find the right diameter

Take the old crystal and measure it with a calliper. As it is a domed crystal, measure the diameter at the base, where the crystal sits in the bezel. If the crystal is cracked or missing, measuring the seat can serve as a starting point.

Important: an acrylic crystal is generally fitted slightly larger than its seat. It is compressed during fitting, then expands and is held by pressure. The measuring guide helps you determine the right size.
