Flat sapphire crystal 1.5 mm

A tougher crystal for sports watches

At 1.5 mm, this flat sapphire offers a comfortable thickness. It generally suits sports watches and medium to large wristwatches, and is often found on cases whose bezel is designed for a thick crystal. The 47 available diameters run from 17.0 mm to 45.0 mm.

Advantages and limitations

Synthetic sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs scale, just behind diamond. The result: a highly scratch resistant crystal that keeps a clean look even on a watch worn every day.

This hardness has a downside. Sapphire is more brittle than mineral crystal under a violent impact: it resists wear, but copes less well with sudden knocks. It is also more expensive, from €16.90 to €62.90 for this thickness. Measuring the old crystal

Two measurements are enough, but they must be accurate:

• the diameter, measured with a calliper across the edge of the crystal, to a tenth of a millimetre;
• the thickness, to check that 1.5 mm matches the original crystal.
