Flat sapphire crystal 2.0 mm

When thickness matters

The 2.0 mm sapphire is intended for cases designed for a thick crystal. It is often found on diving watches, tool watches and large wristwatches, where the bezel has a deep seat. It generally suits cases where the old crystal itself measures around 2 mm: a thinner crystal might not hold properly, a thicker one might protrude.

The range covers 49 diameters, from 18.0 mm to 45.0 mm.

Thick sapphire: the right compromise?

Its hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale makes it highly scratch resistant, which matters on a watch exposed to rubbing. The thickness adds material, but does not change the nature of sapphire:

• it remains more brittle than mineral crystal under a violent impact;
• it is more expensive, from €22.90 to €65.90 for this thickness;
• it is generally press fitted with a gasket, whose condition affects how well the crystal holds. See our page on replacing a gasket.

Taking measurements

On a thick crystal, a thickness error is immediately visible. So measure with a calliper:

• the diameter, across two axes, to get a value to the tenth;
• the overall thickness, at the edge of the crystal.
